Networking is instrumental in terms of professional and personal growth. But let’s be honest, it can be awkward, especially if you haven’t done it in a while. If you’re actively networking or planning to do so in the future, here are five helpful tips that will make your networking experience a successful one.
1. Figure out what networking style is best for you
As we mentioned above, networking can be a bit uncomfortable. A great way to combat this is by identifying what form of networking works best for you. Everyone has their own strengths and it’s important to feel confident when networking. So, if you are more introverted a massive networking event may not be for you. Try networking online with LinkedIn, career boards and online chats. There’s something out there for everyone.
2. Strong handshake
First impressions are vital. When greeting someone in-person, a firm handshake conveys confidence. This type of first impression lasts. A strong handshake also symbolizes mutual respect, all things necessary in a positive networking situation.
3. Be consistent
Socializing in a controlled setting can always be a bit uncomfortable. The best way to get past this is consistency. Continue to look for opportunities that will put you outside of your comfort zone and will allow you to connect with others.
4. Become an active listener
When meeting someone new, it’s difficult to not be inside your own head. But instead of trying to plan out what you are going to say, really focus on listening to what the other person has to say.
5. Follow Up
We can’t emphasize this enough. Always make it a priority to reach back out to people you have met in a networking capacity. Sending a quick email or message on LinkedIn can go a really long way, especially when it is personalized.
